Changing the default keyboard layout in Windows 11

By December 15, 2024Surface, Windows

One of the quirks in Windows 11, are the bazillion ways of changing the language, region and keyboard settings. From the (good?) old control panel, to the language & region settings, but still, there are more to discover.

While I mix between US and Scandinavian keyboard (physical layout), I also swap the logical layout to meet the regional letters like æ, ø and å. The quick and easy way to do that is of course pressing win + space. Although, every now-and-then, it reverts back to the default layout that i determined by the language of the OS.

While browsing the legacy control panel, the newer settings pane “Language & region” I only add languages, features added to the language and keyboards to the added languages:

Configuration “heaven” in the settings app.

However, one setting that is less spoken of, is the ability to sett the default keyboard – regardless of OS settings! In the settings app, navigate to Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings. They A shortcut for this is found in the new ms-settings commandlet.

Open “Run” by pressing Win + R
Type: ms-settings:typing

Then hit “Advanced keyboard settings”:

In this menu you may choose what keyboard layout that specific app window should use, and if you want to override the default in the OS language list!
