Major updates to Windows Recall in new build

Windows Recall – a feature available for Copilot+PC users – have received a luke-warm welcome during it’s announcement in 2024. After the recent Windows insider build was shipped this week, canary, dev and beta has gotten a new ad polished interface for the Windows application. Where users previously were presented a simple timeline that you could slide – and a search bar – we are now presented with the same search box and a new and welcoming home-screen that presents the user the most used applications, websites and services.

This improvement is not to be underestimated. Not only are you presented the apps and/or websites you have worked most in recent time, you are also reminded on where you left off (as you might see in the screenshot above – it is taken when I wrote this bog!).

Exporting Recall images

One of the issues around Recall is how to accept the perceived monitorization of the AI service versus the potential benefit of enabling the service. In their latest blogpost for Insider build they write:

Windows Insiders in the European Economic Area will now have the option to export their Recall snapshots to be shared with third-party apps and websites. When you open Recall for the first time and opt into saving snapshots, you will be shown your unique Recall export code. The Recall export code will be needed if you ever choose to export your Recall snapshots to share with a trusted app or website in the future.

Now for the technical implementation, privacy protection and how you as a user can limit and control the export of screenshots, is protected by Windows Hello and encryption, is explained in the same blogpost.
